Aviano students connect with military working dogs during Red Ribbon Week
Students from Aviano Elementary School and Aviano Middle High School had a unique opportunity to interact with military working dogs (MWDs) during a special Red Ribbon Week demonstration by the 31st Security Forces Squadron on Oct. 30. The event aimed to educate students on the vital role these dogs play in detecting illegal substances and safeguarding the base.
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Ryan McHone, a military working dog handler trainer, guided students through an engaging demonstration, explaining the skills and techniques MWDs use to detect contraband. The students observed firsthand as Military Working Dog Big Ben displayed his training by apprehending a simulated suspect, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Patricio Hernandez, showcasing the dog's ability to protect and serve.
Throughout the event, students learned about the specialized training MWDs undergo and had a chance to ask questions about the dogs’ daily duties.
Staff Sgt. Devon Stewart and his dog, Big Ben, also gave students a close-up look at the trust and teamwork involved in MWD operations, while Military Working Dog Tibi and Staff Sgt. Justin Moore performed a routine to demonstrate response techniques to potential threats. The students enjoyed petting MWD Ryker, reinforcing the bond between handlers and their highly trained K-9 partners.
Red Ribbon Week, observed from Oct. 23 to 31, is a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting drug-free lifestyles. Established in 1988 to honor DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers, the week serves as a reminder of the dangers of substance abuse.
“We hope today’s demonstration leaves a lasting impression, highlighting the importance of staying drug-free and the serious responsibilities MWDs and their handlers undertake to protect our community.”
The event underscored Aviano schools’ commitment to educating students about the risks associated with drug use and the importance of making healthy choices for their futures.
