AVIANO, Italy — Aviano Elementary School celebrated Reading Celebration Week with an unforgettable series of literacy events designed to connect students, foster community, and ignite a lifelong love of reading. One of the most impactful activities of the week was the Reading Buddies initiative, thoughtfully coordinated by the school’s Informational Specialist, Ms. Amy Herk.  This special program paired students across four participating classes—the K/1 split class, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 4th grade—creating mentorship-style reading partnerships that brought stories and students to life in meaningful ways.

Creating Connections Through Books

During Reading Buddies sessions, younger students were each matched with an older student who became not just a reading partner, but a mentor and model of literacy enthusiasm. The older buddies guided their younger partners through picture books, early readers, and high-interest stories chosen to spark curiosity. In return, the younger readers shared their excitement, imagination, and growing confidence.

Ms. Amy Herk carefully selected a range of books suited to mixed-age reading pairs—stories rich in illustrations, engaging characters, moral lessons, and opportunities for shared discussion. Each session began with students gathering in cozy reading corners, library nooks, or classroom carpets, where partners spread out with their chosen books. Whether sounding out new words together, laughing at silly story moments, or talking about favorite characters, the students created authentic reading experiences that blended learning with joy.

Teachers and the librarian observed how naturally the conversations flowed between the age groups. Younger students looked up to their partners, proudly following along or listening intently. Older students embraced the opportunity to act as leaders—modeling fluency, asking questions about the text, and encouraging their younger buddy to take a turn reading aloud.

Fostering a Love for Reading

Reading Celebration Week emphasizes not only the act of reading but the celebration of reading as a community experience. The Reading Buddies program at Aviano Elementary beautifully reflected this mission. Students didn’t just practice literacy skills—they discovered a shared love of books that connected them across grade levels. Many younger readers asked their buddies to read “just one more page,” while older students expressed pride in helping someone else learn.

Teachers noted that these cross-grade partnerships helped build confidence for both sides. Younger students felt supported and valued, while older students developed communication and leadership skills. Several reading pairs continued informally throughout the week, with students greeting each other in hallways or meeting again in the library to revisit a favorite story.

Supporting the DoDEA Blueprint for Continuous Improvement

This initiative directly aligns with the goals of the DoWEA Blueprint for Continuous Improvement, which emphasizes:

  • Student Engagement: Reading Buddies created meaningful student-to-student interaction, promoting active participation and deeper engagement with academic content.
  • Learning Environment: The program fostered a supportive, inclusive environment where students felt safe to take risks, read aloud, and build relationships.
  • Literacy and Academic Success: By pairing developing readers with more experienced ones, the activity reinforced fluency, vocabulary growth, comprehension strategies, and a positive mindset toward literacy.
  • Collaborative Culture: Teachers, the librarian, and students worked together to create a shared reading community—reflecting the Blueprint’s emphasis on collaboration and collective responsibility.

Through this program, Aviano Elementary demonstrated how a simple idea—students reading together—can support essential components of the Blueprint and contribute to overall student growth.

Celebrating a Week of Literacy

Reading Celebration Week at Aviano Elementary School was more than a themed celebration; it was a reminder of the power of reading to unite a community. Thanks to the librarian’s leadership and the enthusiastic participation of four classrooms, students experienced reading in a fresh, collaborative, and joyful way.

As the week concluded, many students walked away with not only new favorite books, but also new friendships—and a renewed excitement for the world of stories waiting for them.
