Aviano Second Graders Get a Scoop of Italian Culture at Local Gelateria
AVIANO, Italy – Students in the second-grade classes at Aviano Elementary school traded their pencils for spoons as they got "hands-on" with one of Italy's most famous traditions: artisan gelato.
The special field trip served as the grand finale to an intensive Italian language unit. Over the past few weeks, students have been hard at work learning the vocabulary and etiquette needed to navigate an Italian gelateria. From mastering the names of classic flavors to identifying the high-quality, natural ingredients that make gelato artigianale unique, the young learners were well-prepared for their real-world test.
During their visit to a local artisan shop, the students were invited behind the counter to see the "magic" happen. They observed the different stages of preparation, learning how fresh milk, fruit, and other ingredients are transformed into the creamy treat they love.
The highlight of the day came when the students put their Italian to the test. It was wonderful to see their proficiency shine as they took on the role of the customer, interacting with the gelataio to discuss their favorite flavors and decide between a cono (cone) or coppetta (cup). Throughout the activity, they remained exceptionally polite and respectful, masterfully using the courtesy words and formal etiquette they had practiced in class. After successfully placing their orders, the students sat down to enjoy the fruits of their labor together, celebrating their hard work with every spoonful.
This immersive experience was made possible through a unique collaboration between the Italian Language and Culture instructors and the second-grade classroom teachers. A special thank you also goes to the large group specialist team for their flexibility with handling school-side coverage. The school also extends a heartfelt thank you to the parent volunteers who accompanied the classes and to the local gelato master, whose generosity in sharing his time, expertise, and—most importantly—delicious gelato made this "sweet" lesson possible.
