Aviano Elementary School Welcomes Innovative K/1 Split Classroom to support Growing UPK Program
AVIANO, Italy — Aviano Elementary School is proud to announce the launch of a new kindergarten/first grade (K/1) split classroom — an innovative and strategic solution designed to meet the evolving needs of its growing Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program. While split classrooms are uncommon in larger school settings due to their complexity, Aviano has embraced this model to ensure every student receives high-quality differentiated instruction.
This forward-thinking initiative would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the Europe South community superintendent, Dr. Elizabeth Fales, and the Aviano Elementary administrators, Principal Juliene DuBenion and Assistant Principal Kimberly Turnage. Their leadership and commitment to student-centered solutions have paved the way for a classroom model that not only meets logistical needs but also reflects the core values of the DoDEA Blueprint for Continuous Improvement, which emphasizes preparing future-ready learners through innovation, equity and excellence.
At the heart of this new classroom are the 2026 DoDEA Americas Southeast District Teacher of the Year, Dr. Sharita Morris, and classroom paraprofessional Tyanna Grissett, who both recently joined the Aviano team. Dr. Morris’ expertise in early childhood education brings a dynamic and nurturing approach to this blended learning environment.
“Teaching in a K/1 split classroom allows me to truly personalize learning,” Dr. Morris said. “I can meet students where they are developmentally and academically, while fostering leadership and collaboration across grade levels. It’s a beautiful balance of challenge and support.”
The K/1 classroom is designed to foster individualized learning paths, allowing students to progress at their own pace while benefiting from peer modeling and cross-grade collaboration. Kindergarteners build foundational skills in literacy and numeracy, while first graders engage in deeper academic exploration — all within a shared, inclusive space.
“This model encourages me to be more intentional with my planning,” Dr. Morris added. “It’s not just about teaching two grades — it’s about creating a learning community where every child feels seen, challenged and celebrated.”
This classroom exemplifies the current DoDEA Blueprint focus on rigorous instruction, differentiated learning and whole-child development. It also serves as a testament to Aviano Elementary School’s commitment to innovation and excellence in education.
As the school year continues to unfold, the K/1 split classroom is expected to serve as a model of creative problem-solving and instructional excellence — demonstrating how thoughtful planning, strong leadership and passionate teaching can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and success.
