Aviano Elementary dives into a sea of learning at Family Literacy Night
Aviano Elementary School in Italy transformed into an ocean of adventure and discovery during its recent Family Literacy Night event on May 13, themed "Dive into Literacy." With 60 families from kindergarten to fifth grade participating, the evening was filled with challenges, excitement, and plenty of opportunities to explore the depths of literacy.
The main attraction of the night was the "Underwater Escape" challenges, where families worked together to crack codes and unlock treasure chests using their literacy skills. From deciphering context clues to fishing for rhymes and unraveling idioms, every challenge required quick thinking and sharp minds. As students and parents collaborated, they not only solved puzzles but also strengthened their reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities.
The engaging challenges involved decoding a series of clues to reveal the combination for a locked chest. With each clue carefully crafted to test different aspects of literacy, families had to put their heads together to unlock the mysteries of the deep within the allotted time.
The excitement didn't stop there. Upon completing the challenges, participants were treated to a delightful array of ocean-themed snacks, providing a tasty reward for their hard work and ingenuity. Every bite served as a reminder of the fun they had while diving deep into the world of literacy.
Throughout the event, families were encouraged to capture their adventures at the underwater-themed photo booth, creating lasting memories of their night of literacy escapades. These snapshots not only showcased the joy and camaraderie shared among families but also highlighted the importance of literacy in bringing communities together.
At its core, the objective of the Family Literacy Night was to strengthen the bond between students and parents while promoting the joy of reading and learning. By engaging in interactive challenges and activities, families not only had a blast but also gained a deeper appreciation for the power of literacy in everyday life.
The event was a resounding success, with a great turnout and enthusiastic participation from both students and parents alike. Even the district literacy instructional systems specialist (ISS), school staff, and High School's Kitty Hawk Honor Society in AFJROTC unit lent a hand, volunteering to run various stations and ensuring the smooth flow of activities throughout the night. Literacy interventionists Rachel Schaul and Janice Cottingham played a crucial role in organizing and facilitating the event.
A parent, Aries Medina, shared her experience, saying, "It was an amazing night! The activities were so engaging, and it was wonderful to see the kids so excited about reading and learning. We had a fantastic time and can't wait for the next event."
As the evening came to a close, it was evident that the spirit of literacy had left a lasting impression on everyone involved. With smiles on their faces and newfound knowledge in their hearts, families left Aviano Elementary School feeling inspired and empowered by the aquatic adventure they had shared in the pursuit of literacy.
